Free Space is back for another weekend of budget-friendly viewing! I want to extend a massive thank you to everyone who caught Minisode #2! We had so much to talk about with those Roku changes, Pluto TV’s push into Anime and Universal’s big bet on all that action programming. Weekend Recommendations!

From Dusk Till Dawn - Streaming on Kanopy, Pluto TV,

- Let's just get it out of the way. This movie has been in the news recently because of sinners and all the discourse surrounding Ryan Coogler's master work. But, Quentin Tarantino 1996 movie deserves some love anyway. If you love horror movies, if you love comedy and action then you come to the right place. I think everyone should just re-watch this one instead of getting bogged down in strange debates on social media, but what do I know?

Pan Am - Streaming on Tubi!

You could probably tell from the styling of my podcast that I'm a big sucker for mid century styling. Pan am is not short on that kind of glamor and design. Christina Ricci, Margot Robbie, Kelli Garner and a host of other folks take us back to the 1960s Jet Age and give us a taste of luxury. But, there’s also some spy stuff in there for people who want their actors doing more than just looking good.

Sunshine (2007) - Streaming on Samsung TV+, Prime Video (Trial)

- Danny Boyle directs a tale of Earth grasping for one last chance. In this sci-fi thriller, the Sun is dying and one team is sent to try and revive it. This one has a bunch of intrigue. (Alex Garland on the screenplay?!?!) All that and a bunch of actors you know from soooo many projects. (Especially if you’re familiar with my other job…) Chris Evans, Cillian Murphy, Michelle Yeoh, Rose Byrne, Benedict Wong and Hiroyuki Sanada? This one is worth it folks!

Hunter X Hunter (Marathon) - Streaming on Pluto TV’s Anime Channel

As we mentioned in the Minisode, Pluto TV is rolling Ani-May all month. This week’s its a fan-favorite with Hunter X Hunter. For the non-anime inclined, this is a battle show with pretty wild fight sequences. As one of those key programs that get people into the genre more thoroughly, thought it would be cool to highlight here.

Free Space Fun Time Corner

So… what was any of that for? I started this podcast and newsletter to help people find something good to watch on a budget. Just a teensy amount of the money used to waste everyone’s time on that HBO Max rebrand could have kept this show going and paid everyone market rate for their work for at least 2 years?

As I am learning, get rid of your imposter syndrome. You are good enough at whatever you’re trying to do to break through. We’re all out here together. Support your neighbors and friends. Lift them up when they are sagging a bit. Be the bright spot in someone’s day!
