Free Movies + TV Picks 11/8 | Bewitched & The Pink Panther
No thoughts, just Beyoncé in The Pink Panther

Greetings Cadets!

Welcome to the homestretch to the Holidays here on Free Space. We’ve made it through Spooky Season and on to cozier pastures. Over at Free Space HQ, there are some small changes brewing.

We’ve been posting more on all our platforms and the return of the podcast proper is nearing! Producer & Lead Engineer Isabel is showing me the ropes. I know it’s been a minute, thank you for your patience!

The goal has always been to bring you some great shows and movies for FREE here at Free Space. There’s a frankly astonishing amount of tremendous stuff out there to peruse. (And on the cheap!) So, look forward to our new feel and some holiday cheer in the coming weeks!

  • INTERVIEWS: Finding Joy and Always Lady London

Recently, we talked to Lady London about her docu-series on Tubi! I really enjoyed that conversation and people were digging the clips on social media. Go ahead and check that out if you haven’t already!

(She’s a delight, we appreciate her being so open and honest with her time!)

We also talked with the crew from Tyler Perry’s Finding Joy (Currently #1 on Prime Video!) Our chat with Tosin Morohunfola was especially insightful, discussing his character Ridge and what makes a romance actually work! Good stuff on mental health for strong men as well!

Our friend Marya E. Gates deserves a shoutout for a moving piece for RogerEbert.com. As one of our most-celebrated guests, this one deserves your attention! Sepideh Farsi talking Put Your Hand On Your Soul And Walk. Remembering Fatma Hassona.

Female Filmmakers in Focus: Sepideh Farsi on “Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk” | Interviews | Roger Ebert
The Iranian filmmaker talks about her harrowing Cannes documentary and how to remember the film’s beloved late subject.

Okay! Now, for some great picks for the weekend and the week ahead:

Weekend Recommendations!

Steve Martin brings Jacques Clouseau into the 2000s in this strangely viral crime comedy reboot. (Could have something to do with that blonde lady co-starring in this one. Beyonce still got us in a chokehold after all this time.)

Peter Sellers made this role iconic, but Martin charms here. Kevin Kline’sInspector Dreyfus is exasperated working with this zany detective. Deadpool & Wolverine director and Stranger Things bandleader Shawn Levy directs the most surprising movie to hit your FYP this fall. Check up on it.

So, with a big-budget remake on the way, (How many times have we done this?) It’s time to revisit a staple TV sitcom. And, a first-ballot Nick At Nite Hall of Famer. Bewitched is beyond enchanting. Elizabeth Montgomery was a capital “S” TV star as Samantha.

And, Dick York’s Darrin deserves more love as a model for television husbands in over their heads. This show glides through on chemistry that feels like magic. Come for comfort viewing and stay for Agnes Moorehead indirectly creating the best TV moment of the last 5 years…

We didn't forget about our mission to highlight the best PBS Passport has to offer. (Go support them and get over 1,000 shows) In the English town of Whitstable, Pearl is a single mom dreaming of more. Now, after a mystery drifts in with the tide, she’s got a chance to be a private detective. Chief Inspector Mike McGuire doesn’t like Pearl nosing around these, frankly, dangerous mysteries. Can they work together to find a killer?

Kerry Godliman and Howard Charles are great to spend a moody evening with on the English shore. Whitstable Pearl is also adapted from Julie Wassmer’s novels as well. So, you know it’s going to be engrossing. Listen, Acorn TV doesn’t steer me wrong often and when one of their shows gets picked up by PBS, I listen!

Free Space Fun Time Corner!

NPR dropped a Tiny Desk concert with the Doobie Brothers this week. It's been fun to watch an NPR oddity that I followed since high school become a legit event on the Internet in the last couple of years.

All credit for that goes to the delightful team over there, with Bobby Carter from Jackson State University really leaving a mark on a weekly institution for a lot of viewers.

Blue-Eyed Soul has made a massive resurgence in recent years. There's been the fun documentary from HBO. Yacht Rock is an acheivement just because of the talent they managed to gather.

So where did the term “yacht rock” come from? 🛥️ 🎸 “Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary” is streaming now on @HBO #kennyloggins #yachtrock #yachtrocktiktok #foryou #documentary #music #musictok #fyp #musiciansontiktok

It's a durable sound, and I can't help thinking we all sink into our seats relaxing to it because of how tumultuous it is outside. Things are tough for a lot of folks right now. And, we're going to make it through. Not just because we have to. But, because the people who paved the way for us did before.

Take heart, cling to your families in whatever shape they come-in, and find a way to enjoy the fall season the best you can!
